Talk Talk

Southampton 1 West Ham United 0

West Ham fell to their first away defeat of the season as Southampton extended their lead at the top to five points in front of a record attendance at the St Mary’s Stadium. This was a chance for us to really make a statement about our intentions this season given that a win would have seen us go top of the league but a poor performance led to a disappointing result. It was a narrow victory for the hosts who were not exactly rampant going forward but the team who attempted to play the better football ended up the winners in my opinion and although it was a very tight second half we just didn’t have enough in the final third.A number of our so called better players had very little impact on the game and the tactical choices from Sam Allardyce did leave many of the West Ham support scratching their heads.Despite the big squad we may have we are still lacking in certain positions especially in wide areas because when Matthew Taylor came off injured in the first half the decision to bring on Frederique Piquionne was a choice which hindered the remainder of our performance. This was our first trip to Southampton since a pre season friendly in 2008 and I was looking very forward to this one given it being the City I went to University in a few years ago. After a days drinking we made our way into a packed stadium which I have to say held a great atmosphere throughout the entire 90 minutes. The West Ham fans packed out their end and were in full voice throughout the game although frustration was creeping in as the second half went on. Other frustrations were due to the long ball game we seemed to only be able to play with the Southampton support meeting every long ball to John Carew with a cry of ‘Hoof’. Any detractor of Sam Allardyce would have felt vindicated with this kind of display. The Team

Allardyce made three changes to the side who destroyed Blackpool at the weekend. In the centre of defence James Tomkins was injured and replaced by Abdoulaye Faye.In midfield, Jack Collison dropped to the bench with Henri Lansbury returning to the starting line up. Sam Baldock and John Carew continued up front in a 4-4-2 formation which sadly would not last a half.Starting for Southampton was former Hammer David Connolly who was at the club in our last spell in the Championship in 2003-04 season. The Irish Journeyman played 39 times for the club scoring 10 goals.First Half

We started very well and took the game to the home side forcing two corners in the first couple of minutes. Leading to those corners were a couple of half chances with Taylor cutting in from the right and hitting a low left foot effort which was turned away by Saints keeper Kelvin Davis. From the resulting corner the ball was cleared only as far as Lansbury who hit a wayward shot well high and well wide.Southampton began to settle and started to knock the ball about on the floor which seems to have been a feature of their success in the league so far this season. The only chances they were creating though were long range efforts which caused Almunia no problems as he just had to watch them rise above his bar.An opportunity looked as though it was about to present itself as we attacked down the right with Lansbury finding room but his cross was poor with two to aim at in the middle. On 21 minutes we were forced to make a change with Matthew Taylor (who was doubtful for this game) coming off injured and being replaced by Frederique Piquionne. I was surprised to see this change especially with both Collison and Noble on the bench. Even Joey O’Brien seemed the more likely candidate but what Allardyce did was change the entire system and we went to a 4-3-3 with Baldock and Piquionne on the flanks. I can’t tell you exactly which flank because they kept changing sides throughout the half.Southampton were seeing a lot more of the play and starting to look the better side as they were forcing a few corners and putting pressure on our backline.A cross to the back post saw Lambert up against Faubert and he easily won the header and knocked down for Chaplow who couldn’t turn and shoot when he looked to have a lot of space and his shot was wide.Just after the half hour mark our best footballing move of the half resulted in the ball being played back to the edge of the area for Nolan who tried a curling effort which went wide of the post. With half time approaching we were lucky that Connolly didn’t punish us as he took advantage of some sloppy defending but took his shot too early with an extra touch available to him as the ball went wide.Diop made a last ditch tackle to prevent further danger but could only divert the ball out for a corner and from that resulting corner and on the 45th minute defender Jos Hooiveld

Losing a goal is always disappointing but losing a goal on the stroke of half time makes an average performance turn in to a concerning one.Second Half

We came out strong at the start of the second half and applied ourselves how I would have hoped we would. A corner was won in the first minute of the restart and taken dreadfully by Henri Lansbury and it was far too long.,Another corner was won a minute later but again wasted. With 50 minutes on the clock and onto our third corner of the half the ball dropped for Winston Reid who on his weaker left foot blazed the shot over the bar in a quite dismal effort.A minute later and we were back up the other end with Kevin Nolan making a tackle from behind and a free kick being given. Nolan was shown the yellow card for the foul. The resulting free kick from Lambert flew past the post with the help of a deflection. From the resulting corner it was actually us who attacked as we broke away on the counter with a Southampton defender missing the ball and Sam Baldock breaking through and he cut inside the defender in front of him and curled his shot just wide of the post where from my angle I was convinced it was about to go in. On the hour mark we really should have equalised. A free was won some way out but as the Southampton players were setting themselves up for a cross into the area the ball was slipped through to Kevin Nolan who rolled his marker but his left foot shot was saved by Davis. Two minutes later a long ball forward caused confusion in the Southampton back line with Baldock making a nuisance of himself and holding off the defender for Piquionne to nip in but his touch was poor and he only managed to win a corner. On the 66th minute Mark Noble came on for Papa Bouba Diop which I was pleased to see mainly because I wanted us to have one midfielder who could put his foot on the ball and pass it to a team mate, a task both Nolan and Lansbury found increasingly difficult. As the announcer stated that it was a record attendance at St Mary’s the West Ham fans responded with a chorus of ’You’re only here for the West Ham’!With time running out it was looking unlikely that we were going to force the equaliser as we seemed to sit off Southampton and when Joey O’Brien came on for John Carew on the 78 minute mark it again caused a few frustrations amongst the West Ham support. I can kind of understand what he was trying to do which was to give us some width with Faubert pushing into midfield and O’Brien at right back. The wrong decision for me was not taking off Piquionne who had been anonymous throughout. On the 85th minute McCartney got forward down the left and was fouled. Mark Noble took the free kick and forced a really good save from Davis as the keeper tipped the ball over the bar.And if that was a head in hands moment every West Ham fans was using the ’f’ word just a minute later as from the resulting corner the ball came back to Noble whose cross was deflected off the head of a defender, past the keeper and off the face of the post.In terms of dramatic moments from a West Ham attacking perspective that was to be our lot and despite five minutes of injury time awarded (which there really shouldn’t have been). You can’t say that we were totally outplayed nor did we looked exceptionally inferior to Southampton but they had a bit more about them and a strength within their side which was enough to take them over the finish line. I don’t think we deserved to win and barely dissevered a point. Were we beaten by a better quality side? No, I don’t think so but that West Ham soft centre still remains as it always has done.Player Reviews

Manuel Almunia

It was the defenders who should have done better for the goal and Almunia was left exposed. Apart from that Almunia didn’t have a lot to do as Southampton had few shots on goal.Julien Faubert

With the Taylor change both our full backs found it difficult as they were needed to go forward but often were put under pressure by the Southampton wingers. Faubert got forward as much as he could and was in no way one of our worst players but again the majority of his crosses were poor.Winston Reid

There were some poor decision making moments in the first half which could have led to further danger on another occasion . Reid had a tough evening but my main issue with him is his dreadful distribution.Abdoulaye Faye

Strong in the air , slow on the floor but made a number of vital blocks and interceptions. He was needed to cover for Reid a few times in the first half and made really excellent block.George McCartney

For the second game running I thought McCartney had quite a good game. He was always involved and despite being limited going forward he was the only player willing to get forward down the left with little support I might add.Henri Lansbury

People will have a go at Nolan (and rightly so) about his performance but Lansbury was equally poor if not worse. His passing was atrocious and I’m still a bit unsure about what type of player he is. He seemed lost in this one.Papa Bouba Diop

His effect on the game waned and he disappeared from the game as the first half went on. He was decent in patches and I can’t fault his work ethic.Kevin Nolan

Quite simply he has little impact and is not effective enough.Matthew Taylor

He was looking decent in his time on the pitch and had a shot in the first 60 second which was saved. He is important to the team because he gives us width and when he went off we didn’t seem to have any other ideas apart from knocking it long.Sam Baldock

The Taylor sub made him move from up front to the wing. He isn’t a winger and it showed.John Carew

He was the man we were aiming at every single time. He worked tirelessly and I thought he played well. But we were asking him to do everything.Subs Used

Fredrique Piquionne

Wrong choice to come on for a few reason with the most notable being that he was not a replacement for a left midfielder and also that Piquionne is shit.Mark Noble

If this game showed anything it was that none of our midfielders are any better than Noble. He did well and the two chances near the end were all about him.Joey O’Brien

On to change the system and give us width.Subs Not Used:

Overall

In the grand scheme of things this result is not the end of the world as it is still early in the season but nevertheless where this result would have put us will always make it a little bit disappointing. We have got to have more about us going forward and we have to have more bite to our performances because when we face a team with a few big players who really want it then we crumble. I know this is the West Ham way but we are expecting Sam Allardyce to change that.If the long ball doesn’t work then we have to have another option and there was no Plan B to be seen.Next Game - Brighton and Hove Albion (a) Monday 24th October

Faubert got forward as much as he could and was in no way one of our worst players but again the majority of his crosses were poor.Winston ReidThere were some poor decision making moments in the first half which could have led to further danger on another occasion . Reid had a tough evening but my main issue with him is his dreadful distribution.Abdoulaye FayeStrong in the air , slow on the floor but made a number of vital blocks and interceptions. He was needed to cover for Reid a few times in the first half and made really excellent block.George McCartneyFor the second game running I thought McCartney had quite a good game. He was always involved and despite being limited going forward he was the only player willing to get forward down the left with little support I might add.Henri LansburyPeople will have a go at Nolan (and rightly so) about his performance but Lansbury was equally poor if not worse. His passing was atrocious and I’m still a bit unsure about what type of player he is. He seemed lost in this one.Papa Bouba DiopHis effect on the game waned and he disappeared from the game as the first half went on. He was decent in patches and I can’t fault his work ethic.Kevin NolanQuite simply he has little impact and is not effective enough.Matthew TaylorHe was looking decent in his time on the pitch and had a shot in the first 60 second which was saved. He is important to the team because he gives us width and when he went off we didn’t seem to have any other ideas apart from knocking it long.Sam BaldockThe Taylor sub made him move from up front to the wing. He isn’t a winger and it showed.John CarewHe was the man we were aiming at every single time. He worked tirelessly and I thought he played well. But we were asking him to do everything.Subs UsedFredrique Piquionne (on for Taylor 21 mins)

(on for Diop 66 mins)

(on for 78 mins)
