October 15, 2011 – MADRID — Spanish authorities say activity by an underwater volcano has led them to close access to a port on El Hierro Island. Ships have been ordered away from waters around La Restinga and aircraft have been banned from flying over the island’s southern tip. The port’s 600 residents were evacuated Tuesday after volcanic activity began. The regional government of the Canary Islands says scientists have detected airborne volcanic fragments called pyroclasts rising from the sea off La Restinga. The government said it awaited scientific reports on the danger posed by pyroclasts, but a research vessel that was collecting samples there has been ordered to desist. TV channel La Sexta reported Saturday that journalists also have been told to clear the area. – CBS

October 15, 2011 – SEATTLE – Washington has been hit by three earthquakes in four hours. Two of the quakes were in the 3.4 magnitudes and very shallow- ranging in depth from 8.5 to 1.4 km. There was also a 2.9 magnitude earthquake, less than 1 km in depth, near Mt. Rainer. Mount Rainier is a massive stratovolcano located 54 miles (87 km) southeast of Seattle in the state of Washington, United States. It is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and consequently the Cascade Volcanic Arc, with a summit elevation of 14,411 feet (4,392 m). Mt. Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and it is on the Decade Volcano list of potentially catastrophic volcanoes that could erupt with very deadly consequences. Because of its large amount of glacial ice, Mt. Rainier could potentially produce massive lahars that would threaten the whole Puyallup River valley. The last eruption of Mt. Rainer occurred in 1894. Recently, the icy summit has been stirred by tremors which again portends the fact that the northwest quadrant of the U.S. is becoming more geologically active. On September 9th, a 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Vancouver Island and recently, a 5.3 earthquake struck the off the coast of Oregon on October 13, 2011. On April 6, a massive undersea eruption occurred and was later discovered by Oregon State University geologist Bill Chadwick in August. The eruption produced a lava flow 1.2 miles wide. Also in September of this year, scientists discovered a 32.2 km (20 mile) long fault under Mt. Hood in Oregon that was capable of generating a magnitude 6 or 7 earthquake. Scientists believe a 9.0 earthquake is long overdue for the Cascadia Subduction Zone of the Northwest but ultimately, the geological change potentially facing the region could be something even more dramatic. In 2009, New Zealand geologists discovered preliminary evidence which suggested the volcanic mountains of Washington might all be linked by a common magma pool. (See diagram below). The almost linear volley of volcanoes strewn across the northwest U.S. corridor from Northern California to Washington, may suggest the entire region could be susceptible to cascading fissure tear eruptions from the strait of San Juan de Fuca to northern California if the entire region was thrown into upheaval from a series of major earthquakes. Admittedly, this is a worst-case scenario that could only be triggered by a string of very large continuous earthquakes and such a catastrophe may never happen but it does highlight some of the potential dangers of the underlying hazardous faults and volcanic systems buried in the region.1 –The Extinction Protocol

October 15, 2011 – AUSTRALIA – Southeast Queensland will be hit with a second day of heavy rain after yesterday’s violent storms killed a driver seeking shelter. The deadly rain and thick hail that lashed the southeast on Thursday left thousands of homes without power and hundreds of homes and businesses severely damaged. The 42-year-old Crestmead man was killed by a tree that fell on his car as he parked at the side of Johnson Rd at Hillcrest in Logan City. A woman was killed when a car smashed into two other cars that had stopped on a road in the heavy rain at Pittsworth, near Toowoomba. –Courier Mail

October 15, 2011 – WASHINGTON — A leading US lawmaker who fears budget cuts could delay modernizing the US nuclear arsenal voiced concern Friday about an extensive tunnel complex designed to house Chinese nuclear missiles. “This network of tunnels could be in excess of 5,000 kilometers (3,110 miles), and is used to transport nuclear weapons and forces,” said Michael Turner, who chairs a House Armed Services Committee panel focusing on strategic weapons and other security programs. “As we strive to make our nuclear forces more transparent, China is building this underground tunnel system to make its nuclear forces even more opaque,” he added, citing an unclassified Department of Defense report. Experts also expressed their concern about the network, whose existence was revealed by official Chinese media in late 2009. The tunnels would allow China to launch a nuclear counter-attack if it was hit by a nuclear strike. “It’s almost mind-boggling,” said Mark Schneider, senior analyst at the National Institute for Public Policy. “It has enormous implications in terms of their view toward nuclear warfare, survivability of their systems and their leadership in the event of war. “It is virtually impossible to target anything like that, irrespective of how many nuclear weapons you have,” he added. Richard Fisher of the International Assessment and Strategy Center said the tunnel complex could allow the Chinese army to conceal its weapons. “Do we really know how many missiles the Chinese have today?” he asked. Turner expressed concern that planned cuts to the Pentagon could block efforts to modernize the US arsenal. “We need to understand the potential long-term consequences of watching as Russia and China modernize their nuclear arsenal while we sit back and simply maintain our existing and aging nuclear forces,” he warned. -AFP

October 14, 2011 – NEW YORK -You want to know the real reason banks aren’t lending and the PIIGS have control of the barnyard in Europe? It’s because risk in the $600 trillion derivatives market isn’t leveling out. To the contrary, it’s growing increasingly concentrated among a select few banks, especially here in the United States. In 2009, five banks held 80% of derivatives in America. Now, just four banks hold a staggering 95.9% of U.S. derivatives, according to a recent report from the Office of the Currency Comptroller. The four banks in question: JPMorgan Chase & Co. (NYSE: JPM), Citigroup Inc. (NYSE: C), Bank of America Corp. (NYSE: BAC) and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. (NYSE: GS). Derivatives played a crucial role in bringing down the global economy, so you would think that the world’s top policymakers would have reined these things in by now – but they haven’t. Instead of attacking the problem, regulators have let it spiral out of control, and the result is a $600 trillion time bomb called the derivatives market. The notional value of the world’s derivatives actually is estimated at more than $600 trillion. Notional value, of course, is the total value of a leveraged position’s assets. This distinction is necessary because when you’re talking about leveraged assets like options and derivatives, a little bit of money can control a disproportionately large position that may be as much as 5, 10, 30, or, in extreme cases, 100 times greater than investments that could be funded only in cash instruments. The world’s gross domestic product (GDP) is only about $65 trillion, or roughly 10.83% of the worldwide value of the global derivatives market, according to The Economist. So there is literally not enough money on the planet to backstop the banks trading these things if they run into trouble. If there is a crash in this market- it will be the death-blow of the global finanancial system as we know it. Compounding the problem is the fact that nobody even knows if the $600 trillion figure is accurate, because specialized derivatives vehicles like the credit default swaps that are now roiling Europe remain largely unregulated and unaccounted for. To be fair, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) estimated the net notional value of uncollateralized derivatives risks is between $2 trillion and $8 trillion, which is still a staggering amount of money and well beyond the billions being talked about in Europe. Imagine the fallout from a $600 trillion explosion if several banks went down at once. It would eclipse the collapse of Lehman Brothers in no uncertain terms. A governmental default would panic already anxious investors, causing a run on several major European banks in an effort to recover their deposits. That would, in turn, cause several banks to literally run out of money and declare bankruptcy. Short-term borrowing costs would skyrocket and liquidity would evaporate. That would cause a ricochet across the Atlantic as the institutions themselves then panic and try to recover their own capital by withdrawing liquidity by any means possible. And that’s why banks are hoarding cash instead of lending it. –Money Morning

October 14, 2011 – NICARAGUA – At least 32 people have been infected in a flare-up of the H1N1 swine flu virus in Nicaragua over the last week, according to the health ministry. All of those diagnosed with the disease are in stable condition in public hospitals or have been discharged, public health spokesman Carlos Saez told local media Thursday. The outbreak has been concentrated in the capital Managua and the adjacent Leon department. “People should not be alarmed, because the health ministry has taken appropriate measures” to control the virus, Saez said. Swine flu — so named because it was first identified in pigs — has killed some 18,500 people since emerging in an April 2009 pandemic, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Nicaragua reported 11 deaths in 2009, out of some 2,300 people infected. –Terra Daily

October 14, 2011 – RUSSIA - A 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the Amurskay Oblast region of Southeast Russia at a depth of 15.3 km.  The epicenter of the earthquake was 130 km (80 miles) SSW of Tynda, Russia and 5154 km (3202 miles) NE of MOSCOW, Russia. One hour and 15 minutes later, a 4.2 earthquake also struck near Lake Baikal- which is southwest of the epicenter. Lake Baikal was similarly hit by a 5.6 magnitude earthquake in July of 2011. The seismic turbulence in southeast Russia is happening along the periphery of a region of the Russia that is slowly tearing apart or rifting along a divergent plate boundary. Geological turbulence will only increase with time. Like Iceland, Africa and the sea-floor near El Hierro in the Canary Islands, this process appears to have become more excited this year and is an indication geological change is accelerating its advance across the world as the planet’s magnetic field strength continues to erode.

The Baikal Rift Zone is a divergent plate boundary centered beneath Lake Baikal in southeastern Russia. To its west is the Eurasian Plate and to its east is the Amur Plate which is moving away from the rift toward Japan at about 4 mm per year. As in all divergent plate boundary zones, the crust in the Baikal Rift Zone is thinning and magma is very close to the surface. Hot springs are present both on land and under Lake Baikal, although thus far, no evidence of actual volcanism has been found in the immediate vicinity of the lake. However, geologically-recent volcanic activity has occurred nearby and is probably associated with the Baikal Rift Zone. These volcanic centers are the Udokan Plateau, located about 400 km ENE of the northern tip of Lake Baikal, the Oka Plateau, located about 200 km WNW of the southwest tip of Lake Baikal, and the Vitim Plateau, around 200 km east of the rift. Besides the East African Rift, the Baikal Rift zone is the only other current example of a divergent plate boundary within continental crust on Earth. –Wikipedia

October 14, 2011 – Papua New Guinea – A 6.7 magnitude struck off the coast of Eastern Papua New Guinea. The earthquake struck at a depth of 45.4 km (28.2 miles). The epicenter of the earthquake was 103 km (64 miles) E of Lae, New Guinea, PNG and was 2372 km (1473 miles) NNW of BRISBANE, Queensland, Australia. The earthquake is just the latest in a series of sizable earthquakes that have rattled areas in the Ring of Fire in the South Pacific over the last 45 days. –The Extinction Protocol
