Somehow the description of Father Cavanaugh says it all. A good teacher or rather a bully in intellectual clothing? Making children or teens cry in the course of encouraging them to think is, well, akin to sadism. remembering it fondly, odd. Handing them Kleenex a sign of disregard for the emotional effect of what you are doing.
In response to Richard Dawkins’ Atheist Academy of Unguided Truth
I was appalled by Lisa Miller's abysmal ignorance of the dangers of Dominionism. As an evangelical (yes!) I had written over three decades ago about its menace to our community, and I was blissfully ignored then. The situation has only become worse over the years. We who regard ourselves as progressives (whether political, religious, or both) recognize the menace this "false doctrine" (a useful term from my fundamentalist youth) are obligated to keep sounding the warning...
In response to Paranoia and the Progressive Press: A Response to WaPo’s Religion Columnist
When people gather around a negative identity (ie, "we're the ones who don't believe in God") as opposed to an affirmative identity (eg,"we're the ones who want to reform the government/be the hands of God in the world/knit quilts for African children" etc.) that leaves them particularly vulnerable to rifts that never resolve. Is there a real atheist community, or is it just a conglomerate of people who comprise "atheism?"
In response to Does Atheism Have a Misogyny Problem?
In the Christian peace movement, we have treated the "Crusade" paradigm as passe, as not worthy of comment in short, and have focused our attention on Just War, Pacifism, and the newer Just Peace paradigms. It has been made clear to me by this fine essay how mistaken that has been. We need to pay attention to the Crusade paradigm in Christian history and theology, and such reflection is long overdue.
