Sacramento International Airport is scheduled to open a $1 billion terminal Thursday, replacing a structure that is four decades old with a building that is designed to be a striking entrance to California's capital region.

The $6 million in public art includes a distinctive centerpiece that is certain to generate attention, a suspended-in-air, 56-foot-long aluminum red hare leaping into a suitcase that dominates the glass-and-steel entryway.

"People will remember this airport," said construction worker Monique Hawn.

Creative Conversations

The Arts help us grapple with tough questions

Throughout history, the arts and humanities have helped men and women around the globe grapple with the most challenging questions and come to know the most basic truths.  In our increasingly interconnected world, the arts play an important role in both shaping the character that defines us and reminding us of our shared humanity.  This month, we celebrate our Nation's arts and humanities, and we recommit to ensuring all Americans can access and experience them.

Moments in the Arts Oklahoma Arts Leaders Won't Forget

"A Moment in the Arts I Won't Forget"

1. What was the most meaningful arts and cultural experience you had growing up?

I was a participant in band at my elementary and high school. I also had the chance to participate in a local community band. While I have fallen away from music in order to pursue my career this still remains one of my most vibrant and positive memories.

2. What do you believe the role of state government should be in the development and support of Oklahoma's cultural infrastructure?

We should encourage and support the development of Oklahoma's cultural infrastructure.

3. How would you champion modifications to, or expansion of, the State of Oklahoma's annual appropriations for arts and culture?

Unfortunately, I am not currently aware what the annual appropriations are. So, after review I would have to make that decision.

4. What three things would you do to deepen the State of Oklahoma's investment in its creative economy (cultural tourism, indirect and direct jobs, nonprofit and for-profit)?

Pursue arts related jobs whenever possible. Work with local leaders to find new and innovative ways to bring the arts to our local communities. Keep the arts in our schools wherever and whenever possible.

Reinvesting in Arts Education: Winning America’s Future Through Creative Schools,

October is national arts and humanities month.

During the last two weeks of the month, Oklahoma business and arts leaders will participate in a blog salon, "A Memory of the Arts I Can't Forget," on the Oklahomans for the Arts blog.

This Land Is Your Land.

Girls Just Wanna Have Fun

Manic Monday

Jennifer James serves as director of Oklahomans for the Arts.

Kansas is the only state in the United State that doesn't have state arts funding.

From the news release:

Stuck in the Airport

Earlier this year, the Oklahoma legislature voted to place a moratorium on the popular and highly successful Art in Public Places program. We blogged about it here.

I was a participant in band at my elementary and high school. I also had the chance to participate in a local community band. While I have fallen away from music in order to pursue my career this still remains one of my most vibrant and positive memories.

We should encourage and support the development of Oklahoma's cultural infrastructure.

Unfortunately, I am not currently aware what the annual appropriations are. So, after review I would have to make that decision.

Pursue arts related jobs whenever possible. Work with local leaders to find new and innovative ways to bring the arts to our local communities. Keep the arts in our schools wherever and whenever possible.

Many thanks to Kenneth Meador for responding to our survey.
