Our aim is to show and discuss old hand planes as you would find at a flea market or auction, show what to look for, what to pass over, how to clean and adjust, where to find missing or damaged parts, how to sharpen and adjust and finally how to use old hand planes. Has anyone used the Golden Ratio in their designs for aesthetics and balance, etc.? Does it really matter? The math defines the angles at 58.3 degrees and 31.7 degrees and it doesn't matter what size that piece is, but the linear dimensions are funky for shop use. This panel could be made 45.5" w x 73.75" l to approximate the ratio. Just curious because I'm curious. :dontknow: ...">Golden Ratio & Design Elements

Rough measurement is that the trunk is about 12" at butt tapering to ~9" before branching. Length is about 10-12'. I am in the process of taking off the branches and limbs. Anyone interested in taking this? Glad to answer any questions.">Free Wild cherry trunk

I understand coating unpainted surfaces to prevent rust, but they went a little nuts on this one. I cleaned it up best I could but when I turned it on for the first time, more grease got flung out. This is my first post. I used to be a regular at the NC Crafts Center at NCSU in the wood shop and the photography lab. This week I found out that the city is removing many 100+ years old trees on West Markham from North Mangum to Washington Street to make way for...a sidewalk. It is my belief that the power company is helping this along because it is the same side of the street as their poles. It's easier for them to manage their line by completely removing them instead ...">Wood Available in Durham, NC

I am building a 1942 Coast Guard Cutter and turning it into a yacht. http://83footernoel.blogspot.com/ We are building mahogany and sapele faced cabinets, and are curious to hear what you have to say about Watco Danish Oil finish for cabinet faces and tops. We'll have a mahogany plywood counter top, with a mahogany fiddle rail across the face. The owners like the color the danish oil gives the mahogany, but I would like to hear how it holds up. Looks like the wife needs some prezzies to hand out as a "thank you" gift for folks that helped out at a conference she recently attended. Fortunately, the emphasis is on hand made gifts. Since I have some small dogwood pieces I thought I'd try and make some vases. Then the wife can get some dried flowers, or what-not, with a little bow and Bob's your uncle. His is 17" tall and 3 or 4 inches thick. This one is 10" high and 1.5" thick sapele. (It started out 2" thick but my first try was pretty bad so I ripped it off and started over!) My next one will be thicker to allow more curvature to the face. It was fun to carve and I learned a lot. http://www.ncwoodworker.net/pp/data/1008/medium/My_First.jpg pete">Greenman carving
