FEATURED ARTIST

Gordon King

Painting has been my life for as long as I can remember. Having won numerous competitions as a child I went on to study Life Drawing at Reading University Art School, then trained as a figurative illustrator at the prestigious Carlton Studios in London. Following my National Service in Paris as a Draughtsman in the Royal Signals (where I still managed to spend most of my time painting) I spent the next few years working freelance, illustrating for national magazines, books and advertising agencies as well as doing portrait commissions. I had my first one-man show in 1971, opened by the late Sid James, and subsequently exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour. My first national best selling print ‘My Fair Lady’ was published in 1983 and I have now been in print for over 30 years with numerous one-man shows. In 1999, to celebrate my 60th birthday, my second book ‘Drawn to Life’ was published featuring paintings from my exhibition at the Halcyon Gallery in the ICC, Birmingham. That same year I was voted ‘Published Artist of the Year’ by the Fine Art Trade Guild and had a painting accepted into the Singer & Friedlander Sunday Times Watercolour Competition. Charitable projects have included Save the Children with HRH The Princess Royal, who also wrote the foreword to my first book ‘A Romance with Art’; BBC’s Children in Need Appeal; a portrait of Sir Norman Wisdom on the Black Watch Cruise Ship in aid of the RNLI, and three limited editions of Darcey Bussell in aid of the Alzheimer’s’ Society A DAY IN THE LIFE OF I love an early start to the day, up in my studio looking out across the village of Chalfont St Peter in the Buckinghamshire countryside with my first cup of black coffee in my hand, pottering around cleaning out my water pots and tidying up a bit. Once I begin work I have several paintings on the go – perhaps the final details on a large oil, or planning a new watercolour or a portrait in progress. I like having a background of radio talk, some of which I take in, much of which I miss, as I tend to become totally absorbed in what I’m doing. By 9 o’clock the mail will have arrived, the phone starts ringing and I am on my second cup of coffee having a quick look at the papers. A model might be arriving shortly when I will try various poses in the studio, sketching away until I settle on the one to paint. Lunch is usually a quick snack but sometimes I’m tempted by the village pub. Depending on the weather, in the afternoon we may move into the garden to find a different background – some stone steps, a hanging basket, always looking for something special.Gordon King

The Battle at Rorke's Drift, also known as the Defence of Rorke's Drift, was an action in the Anglo-Zulu War. The defence of the mission station of Rorke's Drift, under the command of Lieutenant John Chard of the Royal Engineers, immediately followed the British Army's defeat at the Battle of Isandlwana on 22nd January 1879, and continued into the following day, 23rd January.  150 British and colonial troops successfully defended the garrison against an intense assault by approximately 2000 Zulu warriors. The intense and noisy Zulu attacks on Rorke's Drift came very close to defeating the tiny garrison, but were ultimately repelled by blasts of Martini-Henry rifle fire-and some smart bayonet work-with some guts behind the bayonet thrusts! Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded to the defenders, along with a number of other decorations and honours. Of particular note in the painting is the dog 'Pip' - he survived Isandlwhana by retreating along the fugitive's trail to Rorke's Drift. During the Zulu attacks on Rorke's drift, Pip did his part in the defence - by jumping on the mealie bag parapets and barking at Zulus- who were hiding in the long grass and sneaking up to the defences, then biting any Zulu who came within range. Unfortunately Pip was not officially recognised for his part in the action. He was not awarded a VC, on the basis that he was a volunteer canine that accompanied an officer, rather than a War Office issued canine. Conversely, if Pip had been killed, then he would not have been officially listed as a casualty, as he accompanied the army in a strictly private capacity. British army horses were in a different category as they were War Office issue, therefore the loss of a horse in action, or to disease, carried a financial liability for the War Office.
The Battle of Isandlwana on 22 January 1879 was the first major encounter in the Anglo-Zulu War between the British Empire and the Zulu Kingdom. Eleven days after the British commenced their invasion of Zululand in South Africa, a Zulu force of some 10,000-12,000 warriors attacked a portion of the British main column consisting of about 1,800 British, colonial and native troops and perhaps 400 civilians. The Zulus were equipped mainly with the traditional Assegai iron spears and cow-hide shields, but also had a number of muskets and old rifles though they were not formally trained in their use. The British and colonial troops were armed with the state-of-the-art Martini-Henry breech-loading rifle and two 7 pounder artillery pieces as well as a rocket battery. Despite a vast disadvantage in weapons technology, the numerically superior Zulus ultimately overwhelmed the poorly led and badly deployed British, killing over 1,300 troops, including all those out on the forward firing line. The Zulu army suffered around 350 killed, and up to several hundred wounded. The battle was a crushing victory for the Zulus and caused the abandonment of the first British invasion of Zululand.
Helmand Province, Afghanistan, March 2010. The Counter Improvised Explosive Device Task Force was originally composed of Royal Logistical Corps EOD, Pioneer, and Royal Engineer teams. Currently the C-IED task force is a tri service formation including units from the Royal Navy and RAF. The most dangerous part of their work involves locating and isolating IED's before they explode, in this case making roads safe to use.
At 23.45 on the night of 5 June 1944, the 101st Airborne's most legendary unit of combat paratroopers – the notorious 'Filthy Thirteen' – jumped into France near the village of Sainte Mère Église, in the final hours before the D-Day landings. They were the Screaming Eagles' most notorious unit, a small bunch of raw, tough, ruthless young men. Hard drinking and savage fighting - and that was only in training - with scant regard for authority. And if the reputation of this unique bunch of renegades within the ranks of the 101st was formidable, for the Germans it became one of sheer terror. Officially they were the First Demolition Squadron, HQ Company, 506th PIR, 101st Airborne. Unofficially they were the 'Filthy Thirteen'. Superbly crafted in his unique blend of pencil and paint on tinted paper, Robert Taylor's classic new Master Drawing captures the moment on the night of 5 June 1944 when the 101st Airborne's legendary squad of elite paratroopers jump into battle in the vital hours before the D-Day landings commence. The pilots of the 440th Troop Carrier Group struggle to keep their Dakotas level as deadly flak pummels the formation.
The Savoia Marchetti SM.79s of the 281a Squadriglia were to become notorious for their daring attacks on allied shipping in the Mediterranean from their bases in Libya throughout 1940. Among the most celebrated of Italian pilots was Capitani Carlo Emanuele Buscaglia, seen here claiming another victim in his personal aircraft 281-5.
Following intelligence reports that the German destroyer Z.33 was anchored in Førde Fjord, Norway, together with a selection of minesweepers, tugs and trawlers, Beaufighters of 144, 404 and 455 Sqns were at once scrambled to attack the shipping, fully expecting their assault to take the Germans by surprise. Quite the contrary transpired to be true however and the attacking Beaufighters had to fly through a hail of flak and anti aircraft fire to line up on their targets. Moreover, Focke-Wulf 190s of 9/JG 5 joined the melee and a frantic battle ensued. Here, one Beaufighter has become a victim of an Fw.190, whilst a 144 Sqn aircraft tries to make a low level escape, close to the forbidding Fjord rock face.
On the night of 28th / 29th May 1942, Beaufighter X7583, piloted by Flt Sgt Ladislaw Bobek with Sgt Kovaric as navigator, intercepted a lone Dornier Do217 off the coast of Norfolk, sending it plunging into the North Sea after a 20 minute chase. This was the first of Bobek's victories for 68 Sqn which was made up almost entirely of Czech exiles, the squadron being based at High Ercall. Flt Sgt Ladislaw Bobek would go on to become an Ace with 5 confirmed victories.
Japanese battleship Musashi comes under air attack in the Sibuyan Sea, 24th October 1944. Despite her captain's attempts to run his stricken ship aground on a nearby island, Musashi sunk after numerous torpedo and bomb hits, finally exploding underwater.

Launched on Trafalgar Day, 1960, HMS Dreadnought was the Royal Navy's first nuclear powered submarine, entering service in 1963. She is depicted here in the Firth of Forth with the iconic Forth Bridge in the background in December 1963 when she was docked at Rosyth for re-coating of her hull and a general examination.

To the right a ship flies a tricolour. The Elba battalion was Napoleons bodyguard in exile, comprising six companies of Guardsmen, 100 artillery men and a crew of 21 seamen, They formed the nucleus of the Imperial Guard in 1815.
Peter Deighan has superbly captured Jimmy White, John Parrot, Stephen Hendry, James Wattana, John Higgins, Ken Doherty, Ronnie OSullivan and of course the centrepiece, a magnificent study of former World Champion Steve Davis as he Ponders his next shot. A must for all snooker rooms, clubs and players of this wonderful game.
The painting shows Napoleons customary informality with the soldiers in his army. Here he is turning to acknowledge the Salutation by a Grenadier of the Imperial Guard. Murat is shown riding behind Napoleon.
