Knoxville's Guardian of the Greenways
Rose Kennedy
Fear not, treaders of Knoxville’s extensive greenways system—you are protected! Or at least your litter will be attended to. That’s because Knoxville has its very own greenway ranger, Katie Bernier. The 22-year-old with a very liberal arts degree from Florida State patrols our greenways, sometimes finding a shocking clue or two, as Rose Kennedy discovers.

Lydia Loveless Knows the Value of a Bad Attitude
Matthew Everett
Most of the early reviews of Lydia Loveless’ new album, Indestructible Machine, describe the Ohio singer/songwriter and her band as some kind of combination of punk rock and country music. Loveless herself thinks the “punk” part of that equation understates just how rowdy and foul-mouthed country music can be. “I would never describe my music as punk," she says. "Maybe rock ’n’ roll or country, but country has just as bad an attitude as punk does.”

The Exhilarating Risk of a Rope Swing
Eleanor Scott
Just off the Island Home Greenway near the airport, a tulip poplar juts out over a murky backwater of the Tennessee River. Someone, or maybe several people over time, have nailed short lengths of 2x4s along the trunk, classic tree-house-ladder style. Way up in the tree, an old nylon water-ski rope with a rubber handle is tied to a dead limb. Geronimo!

Hillside Protection Plan’s Time Has Come
Joe Sullivan
After a protracted process that’s involved a lot of wheel-spinning, the time has come for County Commission and City Council to jointly approve a Hillside and Ridgetop Protection Plan worthy of the name.

Depending on how literally you want to take it, the “thing” referenced in the title could be Bill Orcutt’s guitar, a battered acoustic with the A and D strings missing. Or maybe the “thing” is Orcutt himself, the former guitarist of scrabbling noise-punk unit Harry Pussy.

Gus Van Sant Goes Hollywood-Light in 'Restless'

Not only is Restless a preciously quirky romantic comedy, it’s a preciously quirky romantic comedy about a pair of death-obsessed teen misfits, one of whom faces death herself. Basically, it’s Harold and Maude reimagined and sanitized for the Teen Disney generation.

Looking for a Project Car
Jason R. Sakurai
Autumn begins when you notice the arrival of darkness coming earlier, deciduous trees turning color, and football is no longer in pre-season. For gearheads, the garage that sat empty all summer now calls for a new project vehicle to fill the void. There are thoughts of days and weeks spent grinding, fixing, and rebuilding a relic of the past in hopes of restoring it to its former glory.
