Introduction

This virtual exhibition-sale features fifteen carefully chosen limited-edition prints from the annual collections of Pangnirtung, Baker Lake and Holman that were released between 1984 and 1998. A quarter of a century ago, the technology and the traditions of the art of printmaking were already established and had flourished for two decades in these Far Northern communities.

This offering of fifteen prints is richly varied in subject matter, in artistic styles and the techniques that were used to produce the works. "Older Prints from Three Villages" provides fifteen fascinating artistic windows into the fresh, creative and exuberant spirit of the Inuit people in the face of their difficult everyday life. The modestly numbered editions of approximately thirty-five original copies per image have great value for all of these and other reasons.

To help orient our viewers regarding the multiple levels of significance (aesthetic, spiritual-mythological, anthropological, technical) to be uncovered while admiring these wonderful graphics, we have added a brief quotation from the catalogue of the collection concerned on the individual page which is given to each print. The artist's and the printer's names and the other key information on each piece are listed  under the print image. Remember: the digital photos we display are much smaller than the prints themselves. The actual works' visual effect is more powerful and fulfilling than the picture one sees on the computer screen.

Four of our featured prints are the last remaining original copy from their respective editions. This important fact is indicated on the page that is entirely devoted to each of the graphic works. - Shaman's Domain, Pangnirtung 1986, and The Power of Song, Pangnirtung 1987, grace the covers of the catalogues the years when they were released. Both prints were created by "old faithful", artist Pauloosie Karpik, who had "the memories, and obviously the talents to supply material for print series" (

Pangnirtung 1987

).

Four graphic works in our show are noteworthy creations by three daughters of the famed Jessie Oonark. Underwater Creatures (Baker Lake 1988), by Victoria Mamnguqsualuk, is a stonecut/stencil that joins her imaginative design and a subtle use of colour, resulting in a picture of shamanism that is both gently humorous and slightly fearsome. Victoria is also responsible for the aesthetically successful 1998 woodcut Ikaaqtuq, which depicts the major legend of Kiviuk, as he follows his family. Janet Kigusiuq recorded an important nomadic habit of the Inuit people in Journey to a Camping Place, a charming stonecut/stencil portraying familial organization "on the road". Finally, Jessie Oonark's third artist daughter Hannah Kigusiuq contributed a fine, large stonecut depicting various social activities practised in the snow, Winter Pastimes.

The oldest print in our virtual exhibition is Rex Kangoak's lithograph Blanket Toss (Holman 1984). It has much merit for communicating the festive unity of this large group gathered for a joyful, risky ritual. Two stencil prints by senior artist Ekidluak Komoartok combine "colourful imaginative images... with... detailed ethnographic accuracy", a simultaneity of approaches rarely observed in a male artist (

Simon Tookoome's woodcut/stencil A Giant Fish Swallowed a Man has superb visual clout. Elsie Klengenberg's stencil Imitating Inukshuks offers an original perspective on the word "inuk" (man). Roberta Memogana's stencil Igloo of Life is existentially soothing. Annie Kilabuk's stencil I Imagine them Fishing for Sculpin projects all at once realism, poetry, ingenuity and a cosmic dimension. Chance Encounter by Peter Palvik is a lithograph/stencil using a painting-like technique to create a grand northern vista. Birds of Summer by the established artist Peter Aliknak is simply an outstanding lithograph/stencil.
