The kids may want to make lots of snowflakes and hang them everywhere.

Transformations  are ways in which a shape can be moved. 

There are 3 kinds of transformations

Slide - also called a Translation

Flip - also called a Reflection

Turn - also called a Rotation

Students could watch a video from Scholastic Study Jams to learn more about transformations. Click on the link below.

After viewing the video, students could practice the 3 movements with geometric shapes or other manipulatives and trace, copy, sketch, and/or label pictures of slides, flips, and turns in their math notebooks.

Rotational Symmetry is when a figure is rotated less than a full turn around its center point so that it would fit perfectly on the original shape. 

Many natural and man-made objects are symmetrical in 2 and 3 dimensions.

The above geoboard is homemade and pretty small. A larger geoboard would make for more and grander geometric designs.  Geoboards come in different sizes and materials.  See some available at Amazon below. Geoboards can be used with elastics or even colorful hair bands!  (I bought hair bands at the Dollar Store.)  Geoboards are lots of fun for kids to work with.

Have fun with symmetry!

(use the center line as the line of symmetry)

This can be a small group activity, a learning center activity, or students can work in pairs - one student can create a geometric design and the partner can create the mirror image.
