Brooklyn federal prosecutors have figured out how to keep the flawed mob turncoat John Alite off the stand in a companion case to the failed prosecution of John (Junior) Gotti: They rounded up a slew of better witnesses. One of them, Gang Land has learned, is a brand-new member of Team America, former hitman and Gambino associate David D’Arpino who agreed to cooperate just a few weeks ago. Another is Peter Zuccaro, who was a defense witness for Junior, as well as his late Mafia Boss father.

A very unusual, 18-year-old secret session in which an FBI informer said he acted alone in killing a businessman who fell in love with a Mafia prince’s wife is giving fits to prosecutors and FBI agents involved in two upcoming Colombo family murder trials. During a May 21, 1993 meeting with federal prosecutors and an FBI agent, Frank (Frankie Blue Eyes) Sparaco “stated that he killed Michael Devine on his own initiative” a year earlier when Devine “laughed at him” and taunted him when he was warned “to stop dating the woman,” according to an FBI summary obtained by Gang Land.

Lucky, A Boardwalk Gangster

ucky Luciano lost a sitdown with Joe The Boss Masseria in Boardwalk Empire last Sunday night, but in real life Charlie Lucky was a key player in the 1931 execution of Masseria in a Coney Island eatery that helped thrust Luciano to the top of the mob heap. We don’t know whether the award-winning HBO series about Atlantic City during its bawdy prohibition days will credit Luciano with that killing in a later episode. But an excellent new book has the straight scoop about that murder and Lucky’s life of crime, including his controversial – long-disputed – efforts for the U.S. during World War II.
