Ayre's QA-9 A/D Converter15 October 2011, 3:48 pmIt looks like the best-selling QB-9 USB D/A converter until you notice the level meters and the level control next to the display. This is Ayre's new QA-9 A/D converter, aimed at audiophiles who want to rip their LPs with the highest possible quality. The analog input is balanced and there are both USB and AES/EBU digital outputs. The ADC chip is fed by an input stage featuring Ayre's zero-feedback, discrete circuitry and it will output 24-bit LPCM at up to a 192kHz sample rate. However, there's...
Wavelength Tubes & Digital15 October 2011, 3:35 pmI am always intrigued by Wavelength's combination of cutting-edge digital technology and tubes. Their room at RMAF featured new developments in both areas. Shown in the photo are the latest HS 24(32)/192 version of the Cosecant asynchronous USB DAC (left, $4000), which features the new Denominator D/A module with 9016 ESS converters, and the new Royal preamp (right, $7500). Wavelength's Gordon Rankin walked me through the design of the minimalist preamp....
Clarus Cables15 October 2011, 3:08 pmJoe Perfito's Tributaries cable line is mainly found in home-theater systems but Joe launched a new brand at RMAF, Clarus, aimed at the high-end two-channel market. Significantly more expensive than the Tributaries equivalents—Clarus Crimson balanced interconnect sells for $1500/1 pair and the Clarus Aqua $800/1m pair, compared with $400/1m pair for a Tributaries balanced cable—Clarus cables are designed by Jay Victor, who, I was told, has previously contributed cable designs to Monste...
Vivid—Luxman—On A Higher Note15 October 2011, 2:52 pm"That's a familiar sight—and a familiar sound." When I walked into On A Higher Note's large room on the Denver Tech Center Marriott's mezzanine floor, the speakers being demmed were the Vivid B1s that I review in the October issue. I loved the sound of the $14,990/pair B1s in my room and they were doing equally sterling duty at RMAF, driven by a Luxman M600A amplifier ($8500) and a modified Revox open-reel recorder....
Sony’s SS-AR1 loudspeakers15 October 2011, 6:27 amSimilar to the system we enjoyed at the California Audio Show, here we heard the beautiful Sony SS-AR1 loudspeakers ($27,000/pair) with Pass Labs X600.5 power amplifiers and XP-20 preamplifier, Parasound Halo JC3 phono preamp, Clearaudio Concept turntable, and an EMM Labs XDS1 SACD player....

Guide To Ripping DVD and Blu-ray Audio Using The Dark Side Of The Moon Immersion Box Set6 October 2011, 8:53 amRipping the audio from CDs, DVDs and Blu-ray discs has never been easier and there's never been a better time than now to start ripping. Pink Floyd recently released The Dark Side Of The Moon Immersion Box set containing six physical discs including three Redbook CDs, two DVDs, and one Blu-ray disc. The ease of ripping audio from plastic discs and the plethora of new content available from Pink Floyd have given me great reason to create a thoroughly updated DVD and Blu-ray disc ripping guide usi...
dCS Does DSD over USB30 September 2011, 3:37 amLast week I went on an audiophile expedition to the UK and the Netherlands. Touring the dCS factory in Cambridge, England I saw cutting edge products being designed and assembled by hand. Across the North Sea in Amsterdam I attended the unveiling of dCS' DSD over USB playback solution at Rhapsody Sound & Vision and visited Bert van der Wolf at his Turtle Records mastering facility. Equally as important and exciting, Saturday afternoon I talked with several very nice Computer Audiophile reade...
Meitner Audio MA-1 DAC Review17 September 2011, 3:09 amPassionate, intelligent, and humble are words that come to mind when I think about Meitner Audio. Several conversations with the Meitner team gave me a very good feeling inside. It's always nice to talk to people who know their stuff, but don't feel the need to stand on a soapbox and tell it to the world. The Meitner team, lead by Ed Meitner, is passionate about very well engineered products that sound good. At Meitner the engineers have ears. This team with a remarkable history of audio innov...
PJ20, Upcoming Reviews, Product News, RMAF 2011, and a CA Site Update6 September 2011, 9:20 pmHopefully all the US based Computer Audiophile readers had a wonderful Labor Day weekend. My weekend could not have been better. I attended PJ20 at Alpine Valley amphitheater in Wisconsin. PJ20 was a festival put together to celebrate Pearl Jam's 20th anniversary as a band. There were some great bands on two stages, but the real events were Pearl Jam's incredible sets Saturday and Sunday. Now that summer is pretty much over here in Minnesota it's time to get to my backlog of components to revie...

Win The New Fono Mini A2D From Rega!13 October 2011, 6:29 amThe TONEAudio Giveaways continue… The Sound Organisation has donated one of Regas new Fono Mini A2D phono stages for your enjoyment. The Curvalicious Dali F5 Speakers10 October 2011, 8:55 pmHigh-end audio products are often subcategorized by a single factor. For instance, in the mid 70s, many speakers built in California had a “West Coast Sound” characterized by a forward treble and somewhat forceful bass. Meanwhile, speakers from the other side of the country were said to possess an “East Coast Sound” favoring midrange accuracy. [...]...

RMAF 2011 Day 1: Benchmark Media Systems / Studio ElectricI head to the Benchmark room to check out the DAC brand that’s been around since Year Zero.  It reminds me of some of the pointlessness of hifi shows:  one can never properly judge the sound of any one component (as there is no context).  I can’t tell you whether one component sounds good or [...]...
RMAF 2011 Day 1: Mark MallinsonESS’s Opertations Director Mark Mallinson gives a talk on digital volume controls (which I miss) and jitter (which I catch).  I didn’t know he was a Brit.  The American audience find him hilarious (Chickens, eggs = jitter) and his technical exposition was thorough without beding too many brains but – there’s always a ‘but’ with [...]...
RMAF 2011 Day 1: Peachtree AudioThe guys at Peachtree have one of the larger mezzanine rooms in which they showcase three systems of varying price points.  Central to each is the Grand Pre, the (new, new, new!) Grand Integrated and the tried and trusted iNova.  Team Peachtree’s verbal presentation is impressive in its slickness and David Solomon sure knows how [...]...
RMAF 2011 Day 1: Wavelength AudioI really like the Wavelength room.  Those are some BIG loudspeakers in a room that isn’t anyway near large enough.  In fact, many of the rooms at RMAF are waaay too small for the sound (bass!) of large floorstanders.  Is this why so many exhibitors choose a musical programme that’s lighter than BBC Radio in [...]...
RMAF 2011 Day 1: Chris ConnakerChris Connaker (Computer Audiophile) talks the auditorium through the ingredients of his silent Windows music server:  CAPS v2.  It’s small, but it ain’t cheap (US$1400ish?).  Apparently, the guys at Vortexbox are now selling them pre-built.  The ace-in-the-hole is the dedicated USB card with switchable power, but it has a sinkhole price (US$300+, yikes).  I’m the [...]...
RMAF 2011 Day 1: BottleheadThe Bottlehead guys have a cool reel-to-reel behind their table.  They also have some awesome-looking headphone amplifier action.  A very impressive range that won’t bust the bank....

Lamm LL2.1 Deluxe Preamplifier15 October 2011, 5:00 amThis isn’t the first time that Lamm’s LL2.1 Deluxe preamplifier has been written about in SoundStage! Hi-Fi -- Tim Aucreman reviewed it in August 2009. I’m writing about it now because, in all the years I’ve been doing this, I’ve never reviewed a Lamm Industries product, despite having known the company’s founder and chief designer, Vladimir Lamm, for almost all that time. His products are universally praised for their sound, and I wanted to hear firsthand what all the fuss was about...
Audio Research LS27 Preamplifier1 October 2011, 5:00 amPreamplifiers are strange creatures. If your gear doesn’t suffer from impedance mismatches and you don’t use a turntable, you don’t really need one. Do you need a separate box for volume attenuation? Many of today’s D/A converters and CD players have volume controls. Of course, a simple potentiometer will also do the trick. Do you need source selection? Just add a simple switch. Indeed, some audiophiles assert that, in the age of computer-based audio, the optimal sound will be achieved w...

Nordost Leif Series Blue Heaven LS Speaker Cables, Interconnects, Power Cords, and Digital Cable15 October 2011, 5:00 amHonesty. It’s not always the best policy, and in some instances it may be the worst. The calculus of perceived realism in audio reproduction appears, at times, to be predicated more on alchemy than on chemistry. Such alchemy, in my opinion, is born from our own preferred taste in what something should sound like, rather than on the audio reviewer’s unicorn: objectivity. It is, perhaps, presumptuous then to assume that objectivity is even possible when it comes to reviewing audio equipment, f...
NHT SuperZero 2.0 Loudspeakers and Super 8 Subwoofer1 October 2011, 5:00 amWhen I first got interested in high-end audio, I could afford less than I can now. I owned an Arcam Alpha 5 integrated amplifier, an NAD 502 CD player, and a pair of NHT SuperZero speakers -- all excellent components, each costing only a few hundred dollars. Nowadays, Arcam’s least-expensive integrated costs a cool $1000. NAD still makes excellent budget-priced CD players, but I play most of my music through a laptop computer. But NHT is still producing the SuperZero, now in 2.0 form, and for ...
Anthem MRX 500 A/V Receiver1 September 2011, 5:00 amParadigm Electronics, based in Ontario, Canada, has been building loudspeakers for over 25 years. Since the beginning, the Monitor series has been Paradigm’s bread-and-butter line of speakers, but through the years, Paradigm has steadily pushed against its boundaries of price and performance, introducing first the Reference series and then the pinnacle of its loudspeaker technology, the Signature series. Mainstream consumers such as I benefit enormously from the trickle-down effect: many compo...
Hegel Music Systems HD2 Digital-to-Analog Converter15 August 2011, 5:00 amIt all began innocently enough. From time to time my editor, Jeff Fritz, drops me a line asking what, if anything, I’d like to review. Sometimes he narrows my choice to speakers or amplifiers, but most recently the question seemed to be wide open, as if anything were possible. I took a look at my system, rubbed my chin a bit (always helps me think), and in a flash it came to me: a digital-to-analog converter! I’ve got a CD transport, a coax cable -- I’m perfectly set up to review a DAC. Br...
Dynaudio DM 3/7 Loudspeakers1 August 2011, 5:00 amProudly designed and manufactured in Denmark, the Dynaudio DM 3/7 is the sixth loudspeaker I’ve reviewed for the SoundStage! Network. Of these, only the Legacy Studio HD and the DM 3/7 are not made in China. That may not be statistically significant, but then again I haven’t been intentionally seeking Chinese-made products to review,

TW-Acustic Raven 10.5 Tonearm1 October 2011, 12:00 amTW-Acustic, a small German company, has made quite an impression on the analog world since it introduced the Raven AC turntable at Munich High End 2005. In quick succession, TW-A introduced five attractive turntables, each with features that made it distinct from its predecessor, yet with an overall design philosophy that demonstrated unifying principles regarding analog sound and the production of precisely wrought mechanics to execute those principles. The eye-popping Raven AC cocked heads wit...
Artisan Silver MC Phono Stage15 September 2011, 12:00 amI think my powers of observation are weakening as I grow older. When a courier showed up at my house with a diminutive box sent to me from the UK, I was mystified. The audio hobby has conditioned me to expect things to be bigger than I had anticipated, and so entombed in packaging that I end up buried in a mountain of paper and cardboard, and dreading the day I must repackage the bloody thing and ship it back. (Esoteric’s E-03 phono stage packaging could make an environmentalist faint dead awa...
MSB Technology Universal Media Transport1 September 2011, 12:00 am“If You’re Not Getting into Computer-Based Audio Now, You’re Crazy.” That was the title of the “Opinion” editorial of April 1, 2011, by Doug Schneider, Publisher of the SoundStage! Network. Although our esteemed publisher admitted that the title was a deliberately provocative overstatement, he closed his article with this: “but you may well be nuts if you invest big money in a new CD player when it’s pretty obvious that the present and future of digital playback are computer-base...
Well Tempered Lab Amadeus Turntable15 August 2011, 12:00 amA record player works according to a set of principles wildly different from those on which other audio components are based. The LP groove and how it affects the stylus function at the level of the micrometer, or millionth of a meter (0.000001m); given the delicacy of those effects and the relatively blunt instruments that must read and amplify them, it’s a wonder they reproduce any recognizable sound at all, let alone the sonic delights that can come out of even a budget turntable, tonearm, ...

Bain’s Blog - Indian Summer"I initially hesitated to include Günter Wand in this group: for one thing, like Sergiu Celibidache and Jascha Horenstein, he was never really out of a conducting career. He had long tenures in the opera house, and led orchestras, if only as a guest, on both continents. A perfectionist who required seven to eight rehearsals, he was best suited to the German radio orchestras who could accommodate him. After an association with the Gürzenich Orchestra and the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra...

Review: Velodyne SPL-800 Ultra15 October 2011, 9:00 amIf you have a copy of Men in Black II or even Stuart Little II on DVD then you have the 2001-2002 Academy Award-winning animated short, The ChubbChubbs. Its stars are some impossibly cute, fuzzy things that look like ducklings with noses like piglets – yet they turn out to be scary monsters with huge teeth and a terrifyingly large appetite. And so it is with Velodyne's SPL-800 Ultra subwoofer. Our sample looks gorgeous in its white finish (there's a black one, too), sweet and unassuming with a...
Review: Acoustic Energy Neo Compact 6.115 October 2011, 8:30 amIn the same week when all six Star Wars films appear on Blu-ray with a brand, spanking new six-channel soundtrack, Acoustic Energy has launched the Compact Neo 6.1 system. This £850 setup matches the existing Neo subwoofer with six Compact One speakers. Having six identical speakers does achieve the home cinema holy grail endorsed by his beardiness, George Lucas, of placing identical speakers in all positions for seamless handover from position to position. Finished in Vermont Walnut, each cabi...
Review: Sony BDV-E88014 October 2011, 9:00 amSony's BDV-E880, costs merely £400 and comprises a 5.1 Blu-ray home theatre system with 3D support and Sony's Bravia Internet Video Smart TV platform. Inside the box you find a pair of 25cm-tall surround speakers, a long skinny centre-channel cabinet and two alarmingly large tower speakers for the front left and right. They dominated my cabinet-mounted 40-inch TV, so owners of smaller screens take note. A downward-firing subwoofer, a connectable iPod dock and the main unit complete the lineup. ...
Review: Paradigm MilleniaOne 5.1 speaker system13 October 2011, 8:30 amReviewed here are the MilleniaOne 5.0 speakers and MilleniaSub products from Canadian brand Paradigm, sold as a money-no-object design, yet promoted as still costing way less than equivalent products for the level of technology. That said, the two and a half grand asking price is not peanuts. The MilleniaSub is priced so highly due to the sheer amount of cunning design that has gone into what is one of the most compact subwoofers around. It aims to offer a proper slice of lows from a truly unobt...
Review: NAD T75712 October 2011, 9:00 amOverviewNAD is not a brand to follow the masses. In fact, while the AVR herd are grazing on features and connecting to the milking machine of network integration, NAD receivers are more 'free range'. The T757 goes a step further and is truly feral. What we have here is a significantly wallet-wrenching AV receiver that has thrown off what are considered basic features on even budget models costing one-fifth of the price. Instead, this chunky beast concentrates on sonic performance, delivering you...
Review: Marantz NR160212 October 2011, 8:30 amOverviewWhether through luck or design, Marantz has created something rather special with the NR1602. Driven by a desire to innovate within the often stultifying constraints of hardcore AV, the company has taken the traditional hefty AVR form factor and chopped it in half. The result is a component with a good deal more va-va-voom than its peers. But there's more to the NR1602 than downsizing. The brand has also rebalanced feature priorities. Network streaming, internet radio and AirPlay are as ...

An alternative to Audiogon?14 September 2011, 1:49 amI just learned about Stereolist from a friend posting over on Audio Circle. Traffic and content is a little light at the moment for anyone to really claim it as a major alternative to A'gon but it shows promise. The pricing structure and the more consumer-friendly disposition apparent from the 'about' page suggests it's worth giving this new site some encouragement. I'll be monitoring it for a few weeks to see how it goes. Here's hoping......

PBN does DIY16 August 2011, 3:16 amInteresting development from PBN, a company that has a long reputation for producing very large (and reportedly very good sounding) speakers as well as a chief, the engaging Peter Noerbaek, who takes out full page adverts in the mainstream audio press explaining his designs. Tired of expensive speakers whose price is determined by labor costs more than design and parts quality, PBN has taken to offering kits of a sort. The new 'Pennywise' series allows you to buy the parts and plans or the part...
