Coping With Stress3

Just "coping with stress" has become the very cornerstone of survival for so many people. Over time, what happens is that it can become harder and harder to believe that not

Why? Because for many, being stressed often becomes a way of life. It does not have to be that way. I have heard it spoken by Maya Angelou that, "If you teach, you have to live that teaching."

I have lived the teachings I will coach you. And, I have walked a mile in your shoes... Many years ago, my mother had a major stroke. For the subsequent five years until her death, I gave up my life, as I knew it, so that I could be her primary caregiver. I was still working a full time job, and had my own family responsibilities, but all other facets of my life I had given up so that I could be there for her during the hardest time of her life. After nearly a year of coping with the stress of being her primary caregiver, I had found myself living in a true bunker within my own life.

All the stress had begun to take a toll on me. Besides trying to just cope with it, I couldn't see how to survive except to try and just ignore its impact on my life - particularly, physically and emotionally. Back in my college psychology classes, I had learned that managing stress was largely about having the time to "do" something to mitigate it: go to the gym to workout go to a yoga or pilates class go get a massage What I was keenly aware of during that time as my mother's caregiver, was that I did not feel like I had any extra time or energy to do what I learned would help me in coping with stress. At a certain point in one's life, I believe that most everyone experiences a tipping point. It's a place where, retrospectively, you can recall, "That is when everything changed."

I had found myself, and these teachings - literally - while at one of those tipping points in my own life. It was a deep honor to care for my mother during these times of immense heartache and change in both our lives. It was because of this challenge, that a deeper understanding of the human condition and its relationship to stress began to emerge within me. That understanding created more possibilities for me than just coping with stress. It was as if I was seeing anew all that I had previously been taught about managing stress, but from the viewpoint of a new lens. A holistic lens.

It was as if a light had gone on and I finally "got it". I began to understand the integrated relationship that exists between stress and the BEST

It was then that I began to utilize some very basic stress techniques that I could use throughout my day that didn't involve me having to go anywhere else, or really "do" anything else. I had come to understand some core stress management techniques that I could DO

Subsequently, these teachings have become the foundation for helping so many of my clients to effectively manage their own stress. When you can effectively manage your stress, you also regain control over your life. I "get" the journey of stress you are on because that is where I once walked. Just like with me, most people are aware of the damage unmanaged stress can create, many have never been taught the everyday skills needed to effectively manage it. That is how I can help you. Part of the problem is that it has become so commonplace to speak of coping with stress as casually as we do the weather. "How are you doing? I'm stressed, but fine. How 'bout you?" You can't fix something that you cannot see.

Sound familiar? Just surviving life in this way makes it harder for you to be aware of the toll unmanaged stress is taking on your health (thoughts, physical, emotional, spiritual) and overall well-being. Many of the clients I have worked with had not felt there was much they could do about their stress except coping with it. The reality is that there is nothing glorified about chronic stress and the impact it will have on you physically, emotionally, or spiritually. Stress does

"I'm tough, I can get through this."

"What price (physically, emotionally, behaviorally) am I willing to pay to just keep enduring stress?" Why is managing stress so hard? Coping with stress when it becomes chronic is challenging because it can impact your “normal” life in so many ways: Physical symptoms

Chronic headaches Chronic back pain Chronic muscle tension Cardiovascular disease Decreased immune function Stress stomach problems Sleep insomnia Cancer Thoughts and emotional health

Anxiety attacks Sense of being restless Increased anger Depression symptoms Feeling more insecure Sadness Frequently forget things Trouble concentrating Worries a lot FREE 1/2 Hour Consultation

Don't be duped by stress Here are some helpful things to understand about coping with stress: It actually is possible to ignore the impact of stress...for awhile. Stress is cumulative, so overtime, you WILL begin to notice its effect on your life, particularly physically and emotionally. "I'm too busy to deal with my stress". I truly understand that feeling. Despite the demands on your life, what most people don't realize is how simply stress can be effectively managed. You DON'T

The effects of stress ARE

Stress WILL

For many of my clients, they could recall the early warning signs: headaches neck/shoulder muscle tension not sleeping well irritability These types of early warning signs are a communication from your body telling you that you have been stressed for too long, and that unmanaged stress is beginning to take a toll you your body and quality of life. But, until you have the knowledge and skills needed to actually manage the physiology of stress, it will continue to negatively affect you physically, emotionally, and behaviorally. I can help you avoid stress wearing you out Because of the time it takes to wear your body down, how you were able to cope with stress when you were 20, will be different than how you will/won't cope with it when you are 30, 40, or 50+ years old. None of us are able to handle chronic stress in the same old ways that we used to. As your stress coach, I will teach you how to do more than coping with your stress while in the midst

Is coping with stress all there is? One of my cardiac rehabilitation clients once told me, “Overcoming stress feels like being on a treadmill to oblivion."

Coping with stress does NOT

When I first met this client, he was coping with a re-occurance of cancer, had high blood pressure, and was recovering from having had a recent heart attack. To make it even worse, he had spent down nearly all of his savings to pay for his healthcare needs. He very clearly articulated his feelings about how he felt the stress throughout his lifetime was responsible for his health problems. He could now "see" it.He chose me as his stress coach to help him "get his life back". He yearned to reconnect with a sense of inner peace and calm within himself again. "I can barely remember it, but I need it back..."

Just like with this great man, so many experience that it is not until your body begins to suffer... (physically, emotionally, spiritually) because of chronic stress that, with fresh eyes, you begin to see anew the impact stress is having on your life. There IS hope in coping with stress It has been through the experiences of my clients that I have garnered a deep respect for the impact that just coping with stress CAN have on your life. There IS
