The Ayrshire based Proven Energy, which fell into receivership last month with the loss of 55 jobs, has been sold to Dublin-listed Kingspan Renewables for an undisclosed sum, saving 20 jobs and bringing a formidable solar contender into Scotland.

Nearly £4m of loans to help communities across Scotland develop locally-owned renewable energy projects were announced today by Energy Minister Fergus Ewing. A Borders housing association which will use the proceeds to improve the houses it offers for rent, a Highland charity which will become more financially sustainable thanks to a hydro scheme and two Edinburgh community groups who wish to erect a wind turbine at a sewerage works are among the recipients, as well as communities all over Scotland.

It's not just Fraunhofer working on Smartphone security. A research team from Google, George Mason University and the National Security Agency have developed a hardened kernel for the Android 3.0 operating system that could solve the problem of using smart phones in military operations and emergency response.

Electronics manufacturer Elcoteq filed for bankruptcy on after failing to reverse a fall in sales and restructure its debt, reports Reuters. The Finnish assembler of cellphones and set-top boxes struggled after Nokia Oyj switched to cheaper Asian suppliers a few years ago.

Lung cancer patients could receive safer and more efficient treatment through a system being developed by researchers at the University of Strathclyde where scientists have devised a method for giving drugs by inhalation to patients through a nebuliser, rather than the current intravenous delivery. The nebuliser system administers treatment far more quickly than existing methods, without the harmful side effects associated with current systems, which can cause kidney damage. It could also enable drugs in smaller drug doses without diminution of benefit to patients.

The new iPhone 4S, available mid October in the US and it seems UK stores at £499 has a "personal assistant" Siri that can understand commands given in English, French, or German. It responds in a conversational style in both text and synthesized speech and can be brought into operation by holding down the "home" button.

Aiming to develop a list of ‘priorities for change’ for policymakers resulting from views expressed by participants, SAC’s Rural Policy Centre has organised one of the most important debates for Scotland's energy sector, which will be held at Inverness on 18th October 2011. Speakers from community-based and national private initiatives, as well as infrastructure issue experts are to debate before 40 guests from the policy arena, private, public and thirds sectors on the issues of who can and who should receive the benefits from Scotland's energy sector.

This summit will bring together experts from academia and industry to discuss cutting edge research and new technologies used in the pharmaceutical and biotech fields.

Leading mobile phone producer Sony Ericsson will deliver a keynote presentation at the 6Sight Mobile Imaging Summit in Malmo Sweden. The keynote presented by Patrik Olsson, VP, Head of Software Platforms, will focus on the rapid increase in processing power and data transfer speeds on camera phones, and the implications and opportunities this has for mobile image processing.

This is a public presentation for the Institute of Engineering and Technology because interest in visible light communication (VLC) as a promising technology for wireless communications has gained considerable momentum. This is fuelled by significant deployments in solid state lighting technology on the one hand, and an unprecedented demand in wireless broadband caused by the tremendous success of smartphones, and the consequential shortages of radio frequency spectrum, on the other han

Research used to compile the Government’s controversial Health and Social Care Bill is flawed, according to Dr Carlo Morelli, an economist at Dundee University's School of Business who worked with a team analysing the proposed legislation. At a recent Edinburgh lecture "A Streetcar named desire?" Glasgow University Professor of Public Policy and Governance Prof Iain Docherty claims Edinburgh chose the wrong tram line to build first and has condemns as a “travesty” the failure to dovetail the trams with improving the city centre for pedestrians. It would seem to raise a key question as to why the UK has such authoritative figures in Universities, whose advise appears never to be sought, or if offered accepted on such major issues?

Researchers at the University of Gothenburg show that interactive technology generates new ways of seeing, showing and creating and that new technology boosts architectural creativity. But out this month is Martin Gayford's epic "A Bigger Message: Conversations with David Hockney" foreshadowed by Gayford in Technology Review, and showing that multiscreen film collages are closer than conventional photography to the actual experience of human vision.

A new EU funded collaborative research programme - Advanced Immunisation Technologies (ADITEC)- will accelerate the development of new and powerful technologies for the next generation of human vaccines. €30m of European Commission co-funding will enable ADITEC to establish a strong platform for innovation in a key area for human health. In Spain researchers successfully complete an HIV vaccine trial while in Canada. The $140m International Vaccine Centre (InterVac) at the University of Saskatchewan, the largest facility of its kind in North America - has officially opened.

The next great expansion of the world’s digital infrastructure is under way in developing markets like those of China, Brazil and Argentina, according to a global census of the industry by London based DatacenterDynamics. But no word at present of any Scottish developments.

The Scottish government through Inspiring Scotland has announced its 24 children’s charities that will share in a £6.8m Early Years Early Action Fund to support vulnerable families and children in the country. Simultaneously the Scottish technology industry plans for its IT Byte Night on October 7th finds 202 volunteers willing to bed down in Edinburgh's Holyrood Park to raise awareness of youth (16-25) homelessness. It hopes to raise £100,000 for the youth element of Action for Children.

As companies increasing start to provide employees with smartphones with the best security installed to protect their data, employees also want to install their own apps for personal use. The resolution to the conflicting requirement is being launched at IT-SA, the October Trade Fair in Nurenberg. Experts from the Fraunhofer Institute have developed device equipment software BizzTrust. This has two separate areas: one for business use, the other a personal area.

Avaloq banking software employs more than 600 highly skilled banking and IT specialists and is headquartered with its main development centre in Zurich, (Switzerland). A second development centre is to be set up in Edinburgh (United Kingdom).

Edinburgh-based Lumison which scooped Blue Square Data for £22m in March has now added Reading-based DediPower, which brings managed IT hosting to complement Lumison's existing capabilities.

As HP completed its purchase of Autonomy for $11.7bn, amid traded fur flying as to whether Autonomy tried to sell itself to Oracle in April this year, Oracle launches integrated hardware and software for speed of analytics. Not everyone is convinced.

Some 85% of individuals in Scotland have not received any information regarding the smart energy grid, according to research commissioned by Logica, a business & technology service company, helping private and public sector organisations address energy needs. The August 2011 research with 1246 UK adults included 116 from Scotland.
