Dir. Satyajit Ray, 1959, 35mm, 107 min. Film restored by the Satyajit Ray Preservation Project at the Academy Film Archive with funding from the Film Foundation. Print courtesy of the Academy Film Archive.

Cinefamily's own DJ Robinson will be here to spin tunes before and after the show!

Early Animated Spooky Shorts!A creek, then a croak. Was that the flutter of wind or wing? A silhouette glimpsed briefly within the penumbra of thick cobwebs. Who (or what) could it be? Why –– it –– it’s –– The Bat! He’s a criminal mastermind, a true haunt with ears to flaunt, who predates Bruce Wayne by a solid decade! This eponymous fiend is the fright–inducing focus of Roland West’s early horror film homerun. With enough mood to suck the air right out of the room, your breathless terror will be as silent as the picture itself! It’s a game of bat and mouse, as a group of questionable characters struggle to survive in a spooky mansion while the fanged fiend picks them off one by one. There’s hidden treasure! Vein–popping tension! Mobsters with guns and mean, pinched faces! The Bat’s not only one of the earliest examples of incredible, atmospheric horror –– it’s also one of THE BEST! The evening’s screening is preceded by a trio of spooky 1930s animated shorts: Night On Bald Mountain, Spook Sport and Skeleton Frolics!

sneak preview of new Larry Cohen film! – 5:00pm

Kicking off our tribute to Larry Cohen is a sneak peak at his latest work!An Evening With Larry Cohen – 7:00pm

Meeting Larry Cohen is to bear witness to how his vast, active mind truly pours out an endless stream of ideas. He makes movies by trusting his creative instincts (which sometimes involve no permits, no schedules, or no production manager), working by the seat of his pants –– but the slapdash quality of his films is a reflection of his impatience to get his next BIG idea out, and who cares when it’s all so much fun? Cohen’s movies are a wild hodgepodge of hilarious ideas, high concepts and genre mutations from an encyclopedia–like film mind –– and the only thing you can expect for sure in his harebrained masterpieces is to be consistently surprised by their awesomeness. Join Larry for a live 90–minute onstage Q&A about his entire career!

The Stuff – 8:30pm–ish

Stick around after the movie for our ritual dance party (with tunes from DJ Ghoul Skool), shots of Fountain Of Youth goo, Pazzo Gelato and shotgun–through–the–stomach cookies!

Writer/director/producer Larry Cohen in person!

The Private Files of J. Edgar Hoover – 5:30pm

The master of high–concept horror applies his snap–crackle–pop talents to the sweeping historical epic with equal aplomb! Once Tricky Dick was felled in the mid–’70s, the recently–deceased notorious FBI head honcho became the next prime target for public reinterpretation; executed with muckraking flair, TPFOJEH is one of the sweetest gems in Cohen’s filmography, as it delivers the juicy goods on the man who had the secret juicy goods on practically every notable American of the post–War era.Q: The Winged Serpent – 7:45pm

Q: The Winged Serpent is one of the greatest monster movies you’ve never seen, complete with creepy sacrificial cults, panoramic NYC vistas (providing an amazing cockeyed view of the Big Apple from above) and the beast itself – a merciless claymation killing machine. It's Alive – 9:45pm

NOTE: This event is a Cinefamily members–only potluck –– but members are welcome to bring as many of their friends as they would like. As well, it is indeed a potluck dinner; things like bags of chips and drinks are not encouraged –– please bring a dish! Impress us!

The evening continues with the highly entertaining run of Hellbound: Hellraiser II and Hellraiser III: Hell On Earth!

8:00pm – Willard (rare 35mm print!)

A pioneering animal disaster tale, Willard stands head–and–paws amongst the vast litter of early ‘70s critter flicks. Anchored by Bruce Davison’s affecting portrayal of a nerd on the edge, as well as deftly choosing atmosphere and escalating tension over full–on genre assault, Willard at times plays more like a gonzo story of empowerment, a darkly tinged entry into the enduring triumphant catalogue of cinematic underdog stories. Dir. Daniel Mann, 1971, 35mm, 95 min.10:00pm – Wild Beasts

The premise couldn't be simpler: the water supply for a large city zoo becomes contaminated with PCP, and the animals get loose –– all becoming unstoppable killing machines. This gory Italian animal rampage movie gleefully continues to up the insanity factor act by act, until action items like "commercial airliner crashing into murderous elephant" become the everyday reality!Dir. Franco Prosperi, 1984, digital presentation, 92 min.11:45pm – Shakma

NOTE: our feature presentation will start around 5PM –– but come early at 4PM for pumpkin–carving, cider and a selection of autumnal film shorts!

Nipping winds fill the air with the musk of earth, smoke and the breath of grinning jack o’lanterns, sending skeletons of red–golden leaves scuttering toward year’s end –– yes, autumn is upon us once again. Join us in a celebration of both the season and Cinefamily’s October birthday, with an autumnal bacchanalia of music and film – replete with pumpkin carving, apple bobbing, mulled cider and other tricks n’ treats. As dusk approaches, we’ll share one of our favorite fall films, Ray Bradbury’s spine–tingling Something Wicked This Way Comes. Helmed by Jack Clayton (director of the classic ghost story The Innocents), with incredible performances by Jonathan Pryce and Jason Robards, and a screenplay penned by Bradbury himself, 1983’s Something Wicked... is one of the darkest films Disney ever produced, and is among the few “children’s horror” films that is truly frightening for children and adults alike. Something Wicked... co–star Shawn Carson will be here for a Q&A after the film!

Disconnected – 7:30pm

Description coming soon...Dir. Gorman Bechard, 1983, 16mm, 82 min.Scary Movie (1989) – 9:15pm

HouseThe Innkeepers (director Ti West in person!) – 7:30pm

“The indie king of the slow–burn horror flick is back, and this time Ti West is bringing along an unexpected dose of wit, warmth, and weirdly effective character–based comedy. Scheduled to work during an old hotel's final weekend in business, a mismatched pair of employees begin a half–hearted search for some of the hotel's alleged ghosts –– and butt heads with a mysterious new visitor (Top Gun’s Kelly McGillis), who offers all sorts of quietly creepy advice to the youngsters. You know it's a horror/thriller flick going in, but the director has a grand old time while building the tension, laying down the foundations, developing his odd characters in colorful ways. And while Ti West is still clearly painting with nostalgic brushes, The Innkeepers marks his most original and novel flick to date.” –– Scott Weinberg, Feat.NETHouse (archival 35mm print!) – 10:00pm

Goodbye Uncle Tom (ultra-rare 35mm screening!)Nilbog: LIVE! – 8:00pm

Nilbog is a horror film score tribute band like no other –– because it might be the only one! Comprised of some of L.A.'s most dedicated film music lovers, Nilbog pays homage to classic soundtrack moments by Goblin, John Carpenter, Giorgio Moroder, Riz Ortolani, Ennio Morricone and other masters of the form. Utilizing vintage synths and a keen ear for detail, this five–piece band recreates down to the last timbre some of the most beloved and fetishized horror movie themes of the past few decades –– and has piles of fun doing it. Hear them perform tunes from Deep Red, Escape From New York, Tenebrae, Friday the 13th Part III, Phantasm, The Thing and others!Goodbye Uncle Tom – 9:30pm

Phantasm II (director Don Coscarelli in person!)Is there a more aptly named horror movie than the enigmatic Phantasm? Don Coscareli’s 1979 dream–logic masterpiece is one of the few films everyone can agree on that works without needing an explanation. Capturing the feeling of a youthful nightmare, its images of the flying silver murderballs and Angus Scrimm’s iconic “Tall Man” are ones you never forget. The film is a perfect storm of atmosphere and mood that captivated audiences in the late ‘70s, and has spawned a successful franchise with generations of fans. It’s also made an unlikely horror hero out of skullet–wielding ice cream man Reggie Bannister, a free–wheelin’, free–lovin’ dude with a real talent with a tuning fork. Plus, it has murdering midget minions, flying demon bugs and a gender–bending succubus –– what more could you possibly want? Meet us at the mausoleum for a rare 35mm screening of both the original film, and its studio–backed, even–more–grisly sequel, Phantasm II! The funeral is about to begin...BOY! Writer/director Don Coscarelli will be here in person at the Cinefamily for Q&As after the films!

The House By The Cemetary (brand-new HD restoration!)To win one of 5 pairs of tix for this show, send us your absolute favorite movie kill (either in a Youtube/Vimeo link, or in text description) to bret@cinefamily.org ... the most insane clips determine the winners!

From the golden age of goremastery to the innovative new technologies of modern effects wizards, cinema is littered with the bodies of the awesomely dispatched –– and cold–blooded murder, in the hands of innovative filmmakers who present it in ways we’ve never seen before, can be a heavenly fine art. Tonight, we celebrate the absolute finest in on–screen annihilation with a non–stop nightmare of intestine–ripping, head–bursting, unrepentant baby–eating and other crimson–soaked savagery! This night is intended for the most severe and iron–stomached bloodhounds around, and we accept absolutely no responsibility for lost lunches. Wimps and weekend horrormeisters, leave the hall; if you can’t stand the meat, stay out of the kitchen. See all you deathbeasts in the murderpit!!!! After intermission, it's time for a screening of the brand–new HD restoration of Lucio Fulci's legendary 1981 creepy gorefest The House By The Cemetary!

Join us after the show for a cast/crew reunion Q&A –– and a full live set from Shock ‘Em Dead guitar god Michael Angelo Batio, featuring the legendary Double–Guitar from the film!

Feel a tingle up your spine as you watch these scenes set in the very location where you are sitting –– and maybe a tingle on your tuchas when we shock you Castle–style with real wired seats! Experience The Tingler in "Percepto"!
