He's gotten a good deal of attention during the playoffs, and he's totally deserved all of it. The 24-year-old was never a major prospect after being taken in the fifth round of the 2008 draft, but the Tigers stuck with him for a good portion of last season even while he struggled. They've obviously been handsomely rewarded for their patience. And I gotta shout-out to Carlos Santana, who could easily take this spot from Avila next season.

Between Avila and now Cabrera, you can kind of see why the Tigers pulled away with the division, right? This guy is really on a level of his own right now; few players of his age have set themselves up for the Hall of Fame like Cabrera has. He's a below-average fielder with 20 speed on the 20-80 scouting scale, but he's arguably the best hitter in the world.

I'm serious. There's nobody else. You'd prefer Gordon Beckham or Carlos Guillen? What about Orlando Cabrera? Jason Kipnis would belong here, but he only played in 36 games. Honestly, the next-best alternative is Ramon Santiago. If you're a fan of an AL Central team, you should probably be reading up on

Very quietly posted the best fWAR mark of any catcher in the National League, although I think that a reasonable person could argue that Yadier Molina was better this season. Nick Hundley and Chris Iannetta played as well, but not nearly as much.

Yeah...   not a good year for first basemen in the NL once you leave the Central. San Diego's Jesus Guzman played great but only got into 76 games, while James Loney's second-half hot streak couldn't do enough to pump up his full-season stats. I think we all wonder whether Brandon Belt's name could've been written in here.

Another really, really weak position in the NL West this year. Freddy Sanchez, Orlando Hudson and Juan Uribe battled injuries, Kelly Johnson struggled before being traded, Colorado didn't shore up their second base situation until adding Mark Ellis, and that leaves us with Jamey Carroll. To be fair, Carroll's solid performance makes him one of the best second basemen on the free agent market

.

Still the best given his prowess as abilities as a hitter, but he may get some surprising competition soon from the likes of Nationals backstop Wilson Ramos. Another solid year from Carlos Ruiz in 2011, too.

You weren't expecting Ryan Howard, were you? Mike Morse would actually go here if I didn't desperately need him in another spot (you'll see below), so we'll go with Sanchez, who played nearly as well as Morse this season. Sanchez didn't hit like Morse in 2011, but he hit enough and he's an above-average defender, so his 3.0 WAR figure isn't too far off from Morse's.

Utley is going to have to give up his title as the division's best second baseman one day, but it didn't happen this season even while the 32-year-old played just 103 games. Still a plus-plus defender and a very good hitter, Utley's one of the game's elite players when he's healthy, although he's missed significant time in consecutive seasons.
