Chinese CEOs get a hard dose of reality
CHENGDU -- What a difference a year makes. When car sales were booming in 2010, many Chinese auto executives viewed their competition with foreign rivals with a confidence that bordered on arrogance. As they raced to introduce EVs and new lines of upscale cars, many thought they would quickly catch up to the international brands. Not anymore. Faced with stagnant sales and weak demand for EVs, several Chinese CEOs are admitting that it will be tough to close the technology gap. Saab receives payment from China's Youngman
STOCKHOLM -- Saab Automobile AB has received the first part of a bridge loan from China's Zhejiang Youngman Lotus Automobile, said Swedish Automobile NV, Saab's owner. Further payments are expected this week and by October 22, the company added. Swedish Automobile didn't say how much the initial payment had been, but a report in Wednesday's Swedish daily Dagens Industri said the automaker had received 100 million crowns (96 million yuan).

China's Chery plans exports to Europe after 2015
CHENGDU -- Chery Automobile Co. aims to start exporting vehicles to Europe after 2015, a senior executive said. "Currently, we are still focusing on Russia and South America, among others, as our major export markets," said Lu Jianhui, deputy general manager of Chery, at an industry forum in the southern Chinese city of Chengdu. "Our goal is to start selling vehicles in Europe after 2015."

VW, Ford sales post modest rise last month
Sales of the Volkswagen and Ford brands rose in step with the overall Chinese light vehicle market last month. VW's China sales increased 6.7 percent in September year-on-year to 160,000 units, roughly in line with industry sales, which have been tailing off since the spring. In the first nine months of 2011, VW brand sales rose 11 percent to nearly 1.3 million units. Ford China's passenger car sales rose moderately in September, but commercial truck sales declined slightly as industry sales in that segment remained soft.

Mitsubishi Chemical set to produce battery materials in China starting in 2012
Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. plans to produce electrolytes for lithium ion batteries in a plant to be built in China, reports IHS Automotive's Supplier Business newsletter, citing the company. The Japanese supplier will set up a subsidiary in the eastern China city of Changshu, and will invest $33 million (210 million yuan) in the venture.

China auto sales rise 9% in September as automakers cut prices
(Bloomberg) -- China's passenger-car sales grew 9 percent in September -- the fastest pace in seven months -- as automakers offered discounts and consumers bought cars ahead of a week-long national holiday. Deliveries of sedans, SUVs and minivans totaled 1.3 million units last month, the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers said in a statement.

Pang Da chairman confident Saab deal will proceed
CHENGDU -- The chairman of Chinese auto dealer Pang Da Automobile Trade Co. says he is "confident" that his planned investment in Saab Automobile AB will go through, clarifying earlier remarks he made suggesting the deal was void. Pang Qinghua said the terms of the deal would still be subject to the bankruptcy administrator's review of the Swedish company.

GM's China sales rise 15% in September
SHANGHAI -- General Motors -- benefitting from higher microvan sales and overcoming a sluggish broader market -- says its Chinese joint ventures sold 240,244 vehicles in China in September, up 15 percent from the same month last year. Shanghai General Motors -- the joint venture that markets the Buick, Chevrolet and Cadillac brands -- sold 115,733 units last month, up 15 percent year-on-year. SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile -- GM's joint venture that sells commercial vehicles -- appears to be recovering from soft sales earlier this year. China's largest microvan maker said domestic sales surged 18 percent to 119,012 vehicles.

Geely exec says Chinese company has no desire to participate in Saab restructuring
Zhejiang Geely Holding Group has no wish to get involved even though it was invited by a Swedish court to help with Saab's restructuring, said the company's public relations director Yang Xueliang. Yang made the remarks in his blog published at Sina.com, a Beijing-based news Web site, in response to a Swedish newspaper report saying Geely is likely to participate in Saab's revamp. But he confirmed that the Swedish court overseeing Saab's restructuring has entrusted a third party to contact Geely with the hope that the Chinese company could aid Saab's restructuring.

Audi, BMW boost China sales in September
Audi AG said China sales in September jumped 33 percent year-on-year to 29,500 units -- an indication that China's luxury market continues to outperform mass-market segments. Audi said sales of two imported models, the Q7 SUV and extended-wheelbase A8L, were especially strong. Overall, Audi's import sales soared 77 percent in September. Meanwhile, BMW AG said China sales rose 21 percent year-on-year in September to 18,588 units, maintaining its status as China's second largest luxury brand.
