The main theme of Simon's presentation is the importance of selling the why

what

why

Another point Simon makes that resonated with me is the difference between leaders and those who lead. I loved his comment that in his most famous speech, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. proclaimed "I have a dream," not "I have a plan." I think we're all getting weary of hearing folks who claim the title of "leaders" assuring us that they have a plan, be it for fixing the economy, creating jobs, bringing peace to the world, or whatever. What we really need, for our country, for our industry, for our professional association, and even in our own families and social circles, are people who are willing and able to lead

MT Inner Circle

These findings, while no surprise to MTs, provide us with some data that we can now share with others outside of our profession. The intention isn’t to say that we don’t want technology (because we do see value in technology), but to call for a process that requires quality checks in clinical documentation. Without that process, we run the right of patient’s records having serious errors that could impact patient care and safety. I invite you to read the report and join in the discussion.Identifying Errors, Protecting Patients

Superior Global Solutions--

Salt Palace Convention Center, Salt Lake City, UT

In addition to the exhibit hall, the AHIMA convention offered attendees a full slate of keynote addresses and break-out sessions. I had the opportunity to attend several of these, including presentations by Dr. Carolyn Clancy of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality

I also enjoyed the closing keynote address by 8-time Olympic short-track speed skating medalist (and Dancing With The Stars champion!) Apolo Anton Ohno

I also had the opportunity to attend a break-out session conducted by my esteemed colleague Lynn Kosegi and Dr. Jurgen Fritsch of M*Modal

This was a very informative--and refreshingly candid--look at the current state of natural language processing (NLP) as it relates to healthcare documentation. As Dr. Fritsch pointed out, NLP is not

One other event of note which I was able to attend was a joint meeting of the executive boards of AHIMA, AHDI, and CDIA. This meeting was a very timely and productive opportunity for the leadership of these healthcare information-related organizations to talk about ways we can work together to further our common interests. I'm very optimistic about a number of synergistic collaborations which were discussed at the meeting, and about which I imagine we'll be hearing more in the coming months. Special thanks to Karen Fox-Acosta for her recommendation of Caffe Molise
